One long drum solo with ecstatic proclamations like, "In the drum space, there is no race! In the drum space, rhythm is law!" Steve is one of the myriad free-jazzers of the '60s/'70s who's been forgotten by the world. Altri Suoni producer Francessca Kruger put him in the studio and let him go, uninterrupted, no overdubs. Nice stuff. By the way, this is *not* the same "Steve Reid" who's a drummer for smooth-jazz popsters The Rippingtons.

Max Roach and Dizzy Gillespie -- "Nairobi"/"Allen's Alley" -- Paris 1989 (A&M, 1990)

A miracle of a double-album, one improvised concert with just these two masters on stage. They cycle through some familiar material ("Salt Peanuts" and "'Round Midnight" are among the pieces Dizzy tosses out) but it's all spontaneous. The package includes great liner notes detailing the night of the concert and a 32-minute interview... a real treasure, if you can find it.
