Friday, April 30th, 2004 ... 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. ... KZSU, 90.1 FM
Format:
ARTIST -- "TRACK TITLE" -- ALBUM TITLE (LABEL, YEAR)
* Ted Sirota's Rebel Souls -- "Saro-Wiwa" -- Breeding Resistance (Delmark, 2004)
A track dedicated to Nigerian freedom fighter Ken Saro-Wiwa, as a
listener pointed out to me. I knew the story but had forgotten
Saro-Wiwa's name -- shame on me. Look him up; it's worth knowing.
* Olaf Ton -- "Ranvik" -- Olaf Ton (Leo, 2003)
* Andrea Centazzo -- "Obsession One" -- USA Concerts East (Felmay, 2003; recorded 1978)
Released as part of the "Ictus Reissue Series #10," these are
historic live sessions recorded on Centazzo's U.S. journeys, where he
teamed up with lots of folks who would become big names in the
avant-garde: John Zorn, Tom Cora, Eugene Chadbourne.
*! Caetano Veloso -- "Detatched" -- A Foreign Sound (Nonesuch, 2004)
Brazilian singer Veloso does an album of American composers,
drawing heavily from the jazz songbook, and from bands like DNA.
Guess which track I chose.
* Cooper-Moore and Assif Tsahar -- "America" -- America (Hopscotch, 2003)
A jazz protest song! Actually this track isn't jazz; it's got more
of a calmly driving rock pulse to it. Interesting album that touches on
back-porch blues as well as the free jazz these guys are best known for.
This is the only track with lyrics. A sample: "America, you have reached
your peak at last / America, the time for you as passed."
Derek Bailey -- "Cue" -- Domistic and Public Pieces (Emanem, 1995; recorded 1976 and orig. released 1979)
Derek Bailey, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Calvin Weston -- "s'Now" -- Mirakle (Tzadik, 2000)
Oh my god... Derek Bailey's abstract, angular electric guitar, played over heavy driving funk beats laid down by Tacuma and Weston. Precious stuff,
big and loud.
* The Bad Plus -- "1979 Semi-Finalist" -- Give (Columbia, 2003)
-- 4:00 p.m. --
* Hilmar Jenssen -- "Mayla Mayla" -- Ditty Blei (Songlines, 2003)
* Cooper-Moore, Tom Abbs, Chad Taylor -- "Spatter Matter" -- Tryptich Myth (Hopscotch, 2003)
* Joelle Leandre and Mark Nauseef -- "Evident 3" [excerpt] -- Evident (482 Music, 2003)
* Nathan Hubbard -- "Raincastle" [excerpt] -- Skeleton Key Orchestra (Circumvention, 2003)
* Tiner/Phillips/Schoenbeck Trio -- "In This Dull City" -- Breathe In, Feed Out (pfMentum, 2003)
* The Claudia Quintet -- "Adowa" -- I, Claudia (Cuneiform, 2003)
* Derek Bailey, Antoine Berthiaume, Fred Frith (actually just Berthiuame and Frith) -- "Indicateur d'assiette" [excerpt] -- Soshin (Ambiances Magnetiques, 2003)
* Aros -- "Tango" -- Train Song (Songlines, 2003)
* George Schuller -- "Having Big Fun" -- Round 'bout Now (Playscape, 2003)
