Back to a three-hour shift for the next couple of weeks, at least...
Format:
ARTIST -- "TRACK TITLE" -- ALBUM TITLE (LABEL, YEAR)
* Evan Parker and September Winds -- "Sagstrio" -- Alder Brook (Leo, 2003)
* Even Parker Electro-Acoustic Ensemble -- [track 4] -- Memory/Vision (ECM, 2004)
* Craig Taborn -- "Shining Through" -- Junk Magic (Thirsty Ear, 2004)
Steve Lacy -- "Deadline" -- Solo: Live at Unity Temple (Wobbly Rail, 1998)
* Steuart Liebig and The Mentones -- "Lightning Bug" -- Locustland (pfMentum, 2004)
*! Rasputina -- "My Captivity by Savages" -- Frustration Plantation (Instinct, 2004)
* Andrea Centazzo -- "Sextet Improvisation" -- USA Concerts East (Felmay, 2003; orig. releaseed 1978)
A sonic journal of abstract improv sessions from Centazzo's trip to the U.S. Features younger versions of some modern greats: John Zorn,
Eugene Chadbourne, Tom Cora. Cool stuff, a nice piece of history.
* Quincy Jones/Bill Cosby -- "Groovy Gravy" -- The Original Jam Sessions (Concord, 2004; recorded c.1969)
What a find: Old tapes of the band for The Bill Cosby Show (1969-1971),
a variety show for which Q was the music director. Features visits from
Jimmy Smith, Les McCann, Ernie Watts, Monty Alexander, Ray Brown ... great
document of the times.
* Trio Derome Guilbeault Tanguy -- "Cannelle" -- 10 Compositions de Jean Derome (Ambiances Magnetiques, 2004)
-- 4:00 p.m. --
* Charles Lloyd and Billy Higgins -- "Bis" -- Which Way Is East (ECM, 2004)
Billy Higgins doing wordless vocals and bossa-nova acoustic guitar.
This 2-CD set has a few tracks like this. Very pretty, and a nice
memorial to Billy.
* NOMA and Tom Walsh -- "Capacity" -- Diversion (Ambiances Magnetiques, 2004)
Weird project. NOMA seems to be one of two trios of electric
guitar, bass, and drums. Tom Walsh is the trombonist who holds it all
together. The result is a split personality -- half the tracks are
shimmering soundscapes, the other half mildly funky jam pieces
such as this one. Nice stuff overall, but strange to listen to from
start to finish.
* David Liebman Big Band -- "Fracas" -- Beyond the Line (OmniTone, 2003)
Frank Lowe -- "Fresh" -- Fresh (Arista, 1975)
* Assif Tsahar/Tatsuya Nakatani -- "Closed News" -- Come Sunday (Hopscotch, 2003)
* ROVA: Orkestrova -- "Survival (In Five Acts)" -- An Alligator in Your Wallet (East Works Entertainment, 2004)
* Kidd Jordan / Joel Futterman / Alvin Fielder Trio -- [track 5] -- Live t the Tampere Jazz Happening (Charles Lester Music, 2004)
*! Lori McKenna -- "Silver Bus" -- Bittertown (Signature Sounds, 2004)
-- 5:00 p.m. --
* Cooper-Moore and Assif Tsahar -- "America" -- America (Hopscotch, 2003)
* Pip Pyle's BASH! -- "John's Fragment" -- Belle Illusion (Cuneiform, 2004)
* Tomato Box -- "Seven Moments" -- Any Road (Rattle Tick Buzz, 2002)
Good quartet with a definite jazz/improv grounding but lots of
rock influences; a youthful "indie jazz" sound that reminds me of Birth or
Happy Apple. "There is a healthy jazz influence at work here as well.
Geoff Brady's marimba work is occasionally reminiscent of Bobby Hutcherson, and one imagines that
[saxophonist Todd] Munnik has spent time digging Jimmy Lyons. ... "Seven Moments" is a
well-focused, Art Ensemble of Chicago-like exploration that shows the group to best
advantage, building texgture, mood, and melody across a compelling landscape." -- Cadence Magazine,
February 2004.
* MTKJ Quartet [Mears-Tiner-Kikuchi-Johnson] -- "Fish Face" -- Making Room for Spaces (Nine Winds, 2004)
Francis Dhomont -- "Finale" [excerpt] -- Frankenstein Symphony (Asphodel/Sombient, 1997)
* John Abercrombie -- "Illinoise" -- Class Trip (ECM, 2004)
Steve Lacy with Muhammed Ali [not the Ali] on drums -- "Cliches" -- Associates (Felmay, 1997; recorded 1982)
