Friday, August 20th, 2004 ... 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. ... KZSU, 90.1 FM
Format:
ARTIST -- "TRACK TITLE" -- ALBUM TITLE (LABEL, YEAR)
* Lafayette Gilchrist -- "The Return of Jes Grew" -- The Music According to Lafayette Gilchrist (Hyena, 2004)
Ernest Dawkins' New Horizons Ensemble -- "10-16-if" -- Mother's Blue Velvet Shoes (self-released, 1998)
* The Exciting Trio -- "At a Place" -- In Chicago There Is Willy (482 Music, 2004)
* Ensemble Supermusique -- "Quitte Pour Quitte" -- Canevas "+" (Ambiances Magnetiques, 2004)
* Paul Dunmall and Paul Rogers -- "Pressure Response" -- Awareness Response (Emanem, 2004)
Three long tracks of athletic, free-jazzy bass (on the six-string "A.L.L. Bass")
paired with Dunmall on reeds. In this case, "reeds" means border bagpipes, which
Dunmall plays deftly for lots of saxophone-like effects.
* Guido Del Fabbro -- "Migration" -- Carre de Sable (Ambiances Magnetiques, 2004)
Varied sound experiments that use heavily processed violin with
various other instruments/effects. This one uses female vocals, long tones
for a new-agey, Native American kind of landscape.
Matthew Goodheart and Wadada Leo Smith -- "Suite of Talking Music: III" -- Interludes of Breath and Substance (Cadence Jazz, 1998)
* The Vandermark 5 -- "Knock Yourself Out" -- Elements of Style, Exercises in Surprise (Atavistic, 2004)
* Carl Henry Brueggen -- "Sea-Sprite Hula" -- Cinzano and Cochaine (self-released, 2001)
From Chicago. Brueggen does little three-song EPs of breezy Bossa
Nova, sort of a retro clubby kind of music.
-- 4:00 p.m. --
* Greg Osby -- "Summertime" -- Public (Blue Note, 2004)
* Nikolai Yudanov, Peter Brotzmann, Sakari Luoma [drums, sax, electric guitar] -- "Monkey Wrench" -- V/A: Amalgam(e): 10 Years of Red Toucan (Red Toucan, 2004; orig. released on Fryed Fruit, 2001)
Short interview with Damon Zick, saxophonist who's bringing
his quintet to town for a show at The Jazz House, Berkeley, tomorrow
night. Damon will be back next week as part of the Industrial Jazz
Group doing a live set, if we can pull it off.
* Dave Burrell Full Blown Trio -- "About Face" -- Expansion (High Two, 2004)
Not as explosive as the name implies, but still nice stuff. Burrell (piano)
gets accompanied by William Parker (bass) and Andrew Cyrille (drums).
A nice session featuring lots of straight jazz piano that shifts into
free-jazz twistiness here and there.
* Sun Ra and the Nu Sounds -- "Chicago USA" -- Spaceship Lullaby (Atavistic, 2004; recorded c.1958)
Continuing our exploration of this CD, which collects home recordings
of Sun Ra's early period with doo-wop vocalists ... This one's particularly
amusing, as it's a Chicago tribute song written for a city-sponsored
contest. Talks about how you should come see the tall buildings and the
grandeur of Lake Michigan.
Art Ensemble of Chicago -- "Third Decade" -- The Third Decade (ECM, 1985)
Continuing the latent Chicago theme, which I didn't intend but
cropped up by itself. Plate o' shrimp.
* Rich West -- "Tribology" -- Bedouin Hornbook (pfMentum, 2004)
-- 5:00 p.m. --
Masada -- "Shevet" -- Zayin [Seven] (DIW, 1996)
* Masada Guitars [Mark Ribot, solo guitar] -- "Shevet" -- Masada Guitars (Tzadik, 2004)
Two versions of a Masada composition. First, the original Masada
quartet doing a quick-footed bop take. Then, Ribot's slower, contemplative
solo version. The Masada quartet was a John Zorn project exploring
compositions that combined Jewish traditional scales/ideas with bebop-minded
jazz. Zorn's been applying the music to other contexts lately.
* Steve Coleman and Five Elements -- "Beyond All We Know" -- Lucidarium (Label Bleu, 2004)
* Spring Heel Jack with Mark Sanders (drums) and Wadada Leo Smith (trumpet) -- "Autumn" -- The Sweetness of the Water (Thirsty Ear, 2004)
* Steuart Liebig, Michael Vatcher, Vinny Golia -- "Transit" -- In the Cusp of Fire and Water (Red Toucan, 2004)
Adam Lane Quartet -- "Intonations for Being" -- Fo(u)r Being(s) (CIMP, 2002)
Tim Berne's Paraphrase -- "Poetic License" [excerpt] -- Visitation Rites (Screwgun, 1997)
