Friday, October 29th, 2004 ... 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. ... KZSU, 90.1 FM
Got three shows for Oct. 30 that I'm hoping to promote:
- Dan Plonsey's "Daniel Popsicle" band
- Ara Anderson's Boostamonte, a dark-tinged brass ensemble
- The Marco Eneidi tribute festival going on Oct. 30 and 31. These pair
Marco, an alto saxophonist often compared to Jimmy Lyons, with a variety
of local folks. It's an appreciation of the contributions Marco has made
to the local scene, as he'll be leaving in November to live in Europe.
Format:
ARTIST -- "TRACK TITLE" -- ALBUM TITLE (LABEL, YEAR)
* Steuart Liebig and Minim -- "Mosaic" part 2 -- Quicksilver (pfMentum, 2004)
* Dan Plonsey -- "C"/"D"/"E" -- Portcullis (Unlimited Sedition, 2004)
* Dragons 1976 -- "Canopy" -- On Cortez (Locust, 2004)
* Dan Plonsey -- "M"/"N"/"O" -- Portcullis (Unlimited Sedition, 2004)
* Sonu -- "Composition Nr. 287 + 98a" -- Sounds from the Source (Nine Winds, 2004)
* Kent Carter String Trio -- "Hungarian Fantasy" -- The Willisau Suites (Emanem, 2004)
* Michael Mussilami Octet -- "The Walking Wounded" -- Spirits (Playscape, 2004)
Boostamonte -- "Horacio's at Thanksgiving" -- Boostamonte (self-released, 2001)
(Interview with Ara Anderson, trumpeter and composer for Boostamonte.)
Boostamonte -- "Dr. Dre Meets Thelonious Monk Funk" -- Boostamonte (self-released, 2001)
Boostamonte -- "Captain Nemo's Last Adventure" -- Boostamonte (self-released, 2001)
* Guus Janssen -- "Angelicanzone" -- Hollywood O.K. Pieces (GeestGronden, 2004)
Another entry in the "new Dutch swing" category. Nice stuff; Guus' music runs along
contemporary straightahead lines but packs lots of energy and adventure; plenty
of free-jazz moments. The band has an unusual sound, too, with a leading
line of clarinet, French horn, and bassoon.
* Michael Jefry Stevens and Michael Rabinowitz -- "Memory Lane" -- Play (Drimala, 2004)
Another bassoon! This time in partnership with Stevens' piano.
A jazz-improv session that stays in a classical-music mode, very nice.
* Scott Fields Ensemble -- "Christangelfox" [excerpt] -- Christangelfox (482 Music, 2004)
* Jeff Parker, Kevin Drumm, Michael Zerang -- "Miss Big Meen" -- Out Trios Volume Two (Atatvistic, 2004)
* John Butcher and Gino Robair -- "Pudsey Surprise" -- New Oakland Burr (Rastascan, 2004)
! Wall of Voodoo -- "Mexican Radio" -- Fly on the Wall: Music and Commentary from Stan Ridgway (Geffen, 1986)
KSJO, San Jose's oldest rock radio station, changed formats to
Spanish yesterday. KSJO was one of a few "classic rock" powerhouses back
in my youth, and the last of them to survive (albeit no longer playing
things I'd listen to). It wasn't ever my favorite
station, but still -- there's something sad about seeing it go. Anyway,
this was the last song played on KSJO before the format switch. Just figured
I'd share that with folks.
* Don Byron -- "'Leopold, Leopold'" -- Ivey-Divey (Blue Note, 2004)
The track title is in quotation marks, which kind of messes up my
convention of putting trck titles in quotation marks. Not that anyone
cares, but that's why the punctuation looks so funny there.
* Sam Rivers, Adam Rudolph, Harris Eisenstadt -- "Capacious" -- Vista (Meta, 2004)
Marco Eneidi -- "Untitled" -- Final Disconnect Notice (Botticelli, 1994)
Marco Eneidi, Glenn Spearman, William Parker, Jackson Krall -- "False Alarm" -- Live at Radio Valencia (Botticelli, 2000)
