Paying tribute to Marco Eneidi -- for once, honoring a musician who isn't dead, just leaving. After a little more than a decade in the Bay Area, Marco is departing for a chance to live in Vienna for a while. He's already got gigs lined up and has a line on a place to stay -- an excellent start. Here's hoping he has better luck there than here.

Marco shopped his music around to labels, but like a lot of free-jazz artists, he ended up having to release a lot of CDs on his own. Most of his stuff can be purchased through Cadence: http://www.cadencebuilding.com.

The sequel to the album Organic Resonance release last year. This is the second set of the same live concert, featuring longer tracks (28 and 13 minutes) and one shorter but sparse one (8 minutes). Both these guys are masters of the jazz craft. Braxton in particular gets accused of being too "academic," but while you can hear elements of seriousness in here, it's also clear these guys are having a fun time just jamming as a duet. The music on both CDs shines.

A short track of unaccompanied contrabass saxophone. The whole album features the big, lumbering instrument, often in fast-stepping be-boppy settings for an incongruous feel. This particular track carries a soulful jazz/blues overtone. Really cool stuff.

An example of Marco's slower, more lyrical playing, which lets the blues influence sink in a bit more. This is a really nice trio CD -- one of my favorites among Marco's output -- with plenty of fast, blazing playing, and this nice, 14-minute relaxer.

Glenn Spearman (in a sextet including Marco Eneidi) -- "Blare" -- Free Worlds (Black Saint, 2000)

Nice studio recording of a Spearman composition. Marco and Glenn collaborated quite a bit before Glenn's untimely death in 1998. For the next couple of years, Marco organized annual memorial concerts for Glenn, featuring colleagues of theirs playing at Mills College, where Glenn held a teaching position.

? Peter Brotzmann, Lisle Ellis, Marco Eneidi, Jackson Krall -- "No. 5" -- Live at Spruce Street Forum (Botticelli, 2004)

Great bit of casting, as they say, as Brotzmann is known for the ferocity in his sax playing. He and Marco combine for some force-nine attacks on this disk.
