Part of an album-long suite from Baptiste celebrating the life,
work, and words of Martin Luther King. Very nice stuff that
covers a lot of mainstream-jazz ground. There's the expected
Coltrane-ish post-bop feel, but also nice touches like this track,
which is packed with danceable New Orleans brass.
* Christophe Grab -- "Smart Rebels" -- Personal (Unit, 2004)
Vinkeloe, a Swedish saxophonist, has been visiting the Bay Area
occasionally for some time now, performing in improv combos with local
folks. Here she teams up with some of the veterans of the local scene
for a set of concise, engaging improvisations.
* Dave Douglas -- "A Nasty Spill" -- Mountain Passages (Greenleaf, 2004)
Dave's on a tour of the west coast that will not be
arriving in San Francisco, !sob! Luckily, I've got a trip to L.A.
this weekend that had already been planned, and with any luck I'll
be able to catch him Saturday at the Jazz
Bakery. He won't have this same band -- which features
standout musicians like Michael Moore (sax, from Holland) and
Peggy Lee (cello, from Vancouver), but it should still be
a great time.
* Happy Apple -- "Starchild Cranium" -- The Peace Between Our Companies (Sunnyside, 2005)
Actually this track is just Howard, on unaccompanied saxophone.
A nicely musical journey, lots of ideas here. Howard is playing this
weekend with David Wessel at CNMAT in Berkeley, both on synthesizers.
* Keith Rowe and Christian Fennesz -- (Track 2, untitled) -- Live at the LU (Erstwhile, 2004)
"Old-school noise," as our music director calls it. A low-key
rumble of electronics.
* Kaiser/Diaz-Infante Sextet -- "Suite Solutio" Parts I and II -- The Alchemical Mass/Suite Solutio (pfMentum, 2004)
Very cool noisy instrumental rock from Boise, Idaho, featuring a 4-year-old drummer.
* Lisle Ellis, Marco Eneidi, Peter Valsamis aka Sound on Survival -- "News Blues" -- American Roadwork (CIMP, 2004)
Some faithful Joe Henderson covers on there. This isn't one of them;
it's a composition credited to the band. Nice quintet outing with a
lush sound.
* The Nels Cline Singers -- "Bright Moon" -- The Giant Pin (Cryptogramophone, 2004)
