Truncated show due to Stanford volleyball, the first sports broadcast of the academic year. Big thanks to Geoff Goodfellow for ceding part of his 12:00-3:00 show for my use.

A very nice archival recording of British free jazz. Lots of untethered improv in here, but the pieces are rooted in jazzy compositions and solos. Kind of a beginner's step towards the new improv language being developed at the time by the likes of Derek Bailey -- really nice stuff. Prodigious use of vibes and electric piano add a cool '60s splash. Oh, and you can hear a young Kenny Wheeler on here, and likewise on several 1968-73 reissues from the Emanem label.

* Kahil El'Zabar Ritual Trio -- "Return of the Lost Tribe" -- (Delmark, 2005)

* Tim Brady -- "Wood, Metal, Skin and Strings" (1st movement of "Playing Guitar: Symphony #1) -- Playing Guitar: Symphony #1 (Ambiances Magnetiques, 2005)

Dynamic modern-classical piece centered around -- you guessed it -- electric guitar. With some quiet, jazzy moments too, and some big metallic noisy guitar-effects showcases, but this opening movement takes advantage of the full ensemble, with big loud horns and dramatic strings and a breakneck pace overall.
