Also known as Mataro in the Catalan regions of its origins, Mourvedre was extensively planted in California at the turn of the century. Cline Cellars' sandy vineyards around the town of Oakley in Contra Costa County have proved to be the ideal terrain for this fascinating varietal.

Low annual average rainfalls, head-pruned non-grafted vines and the unique sandy soils of Oakley naturally restrict yields to a minuscule 1.5 to 2 tons per acre. All of Cline's Mourvedre vineyards are dry-farmed, producing explosively flavored fruit that is rich in dark cherry, chocolate, fresh herbs, anise and clove flavors and aromas. Sensitive winemaking practices and barrel aging in a combination of French and American oak lends a sense of grace and a lingering vanilla finish to this wine.

Best enjoyed with hearty, spicy cuisine, Cline Cellars 1993 Mourvedre is simply delicious presently and will reward patient cellaring for 7 to 10 years.
