Springtime in Wine Country...

Spring, the rebirth of the land, packed with vibrant colors, abundance of lush green hillsides, intense and fresh smells and the emergence of the growing cycle for the vines... a palate full of beauty. As we soak this all in and enjoy the start of a new season, growers are concerned with the delicate vines that are so young and vulnerable.
A major concern this time of year is spring frost. It can destroy these young and delicate buds causing more buds to burst. It is the first buds that are the most fruitful so avoiding spring frost is crucial. However, not all vineyards are susceptible to frost; it depends on the location of the vineyard and the grape variety.

There are methods that help reduce some of the risk of frost, late pruning being one, this method delays bud break. Even high trellis systems located on flat land reduces some risk since the main vine grows above the coldest air layer. Wind machines are also used; they are strong fans that mix up the cold air with the warmer air from above, preventing frost on cold spring nights.

Cline Cellars Los Carneros Ranch and Contra Costa County vineyards are in bloom and so far have not been inflicted with spring frost due largely to the varietals and the location of the vineyards. However, throughout the Sonoma and Napa Valleys the rumbling sounds of the wind machines in the early morning hours reminds of how susceptible the vineyards can be.

You're invited to take part in the worlds largest tasting of wines made from classic Rhône grape varieties . . . Hospice du Rhône. From May 30 - June 1, producers from around the world will converge on the Mid-State Fairgrounds in Paso Robles, California for an incredible three days of meals, seminars, and tastings sure to overwhelm even the most ardent Rhône fanatic.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of an event the wine press has called it the best wine event you've probably never heard of. In recognition of this anniversary, our seminars this year focus on regions, varieties and categories of wines that deserve more of your attention.

At Hospice du Rhône nearly every winery is represented by the winemaker or winery owner, allowing you the opportunity to discuss Australian Shiraz with Stephen and Prue Henschke, French Marsanne with Michel Chapoutier, Spanish Carignan with Daphne Glorian or California Mourvedre with Matt Cline from Cline Cellars all in the same day!

One of the highlights of our annual Celebration is the Hospice Barrel Auction. For the last year, 40 of the world's leading winemakers have been crafting special, one-of-a-kind barrel lots of Rhône-inspired wines for this auction. Look for Cline Cellars Big Break Cuvee.

Question of the Month?
Are all Cline Cellars wines aged in wood barrels?

Almost all of Cline Cellars premium varietals wines are aged in French or American oak. Some of our white wines will be aged in oak less than 6 months and the red wines 12-18 months. The wines that are not aged in barrel are the Oakley Vin Gris Rose, about 40% of the Viognier, and in the Oakley Vin Blanc the Sauvignon Blanc, Palomino and Marsanne.
