U.S.A. Flag

Cline Cellars is deeply saddened by the horrific events that took place September 11, 2001. Our thoughts and prayers to all those lives lost and to their families and friends. Also, our deepest gratitude to all the heroes - the firefighters, the police officers and the volunteers endless efforts to restore our nation piece by piece.

It is time to honor the dead and embrace the living. We live in a great nation and should all stand proud. People are displaying a civic and patriotic spirit that only weeks ago seemed lost. From the spontaneous reaction to seeing the American flag in every neighborhood coast to coast or for those who waited three, four and even five hours in line to give blood, children collecting toys for children in NYC and Washington D.C., professional athletes standing in the streets collecting donations, the local quilt club making American flags, the list is endless and our nation has been reunited as one.

The Flag by Charles Evans Hughes
The flag is the symbol of our national unity, our national endeavor, our national aspiration.
The flag tells of the struggle for independence, of union preserved, of liberty and union one and inseparable, of the sacrifices of brave men and women to whom the ideals and honor of this nation have been dearer than life.
It means America first; it means an undivided allegiance.
It means America united, strong and efficient, equal to her tasks.
It means that you cannot be saved by the valor and devotion of your ancestors, that to each generation comes its patriotic duty; and that upon your willingness to sacrifice and endure as those before you have sacrificed and endured rests the national hope.
It speaks of equal rights, of the inspiration of free institutions exemplified and vindicated, of liberty under law intelligently conceived and impartially administrated. There is not a thread in it but scorns self-indulgence, weakness, and rapacity. It is eloquent of our community interests, outweighing all divergencies of opinion, and of our common destiny.

GOD BLESS AMERICA

Question of the Month?

How do you get color and flavor for red wine?

We get color and flavor through maceration during fermentation. It is the contact between the solids (skins and stems) and liquid (juice) through pump overs. Pump overs circulate the grape skins and juice extracting flavor and color. To simplify the process, it is like making a fresh pot of coffee.

Harvest Update

Rare Thunderstorm Sparks Valley

A rare September Thunderstorm rocked the Sonoma Valley on Monday, September 24th. The wild weather was due to cool temperatures from the Pacific Northwest. The rain that accompanied the storm was less than a tenth of inch, so no damage to report in the vineyards. The storm did cause a slight delay for our production crew with the wine press equipment being located outside, operations ceased until the storm cleared. The winery was literally in the middle of this spectacular lightning show, at one point the thunder was so intense it literally rocked the wine warehouse.

In September, temperatures fell below normal with overcast and cool mornings followed by sunny but mild afternoon temperatures in the Sonoma Valley for most of the month. The harvesting did continue but at a moderate pace. By September 30th, Cline Cellars has crushed 2300 tons with approximately 400 tons to go. Most of the grapes still in the vineyard are red. Their brix levels (degree of sugar) are hovering around 21° brix but will remain on the vine until they reach optimal ripeness of 24° brix. Things should start to pick-up as we begin October with an Indian Summer. For the past few days the mercury readings have been above the 90° mark, which will help bump up the sugars.

OTher News...
