1998 Syrah Label

Distinctive California version, with a Côte-Rôtie-like spiciness and personality. Shows excellent concentration, with earthy flavors of cherry game, leather and currant. Tannins are firm on the finish. Drink now through 2005. J.L.

Question of the Month?

Where did the poem come from that is listed on the back label of your California Zinfandel?
Winemaker Matt Cline is extremely familiar with the poetry that graces the back label of the Cline Cellars California Zinfandel. In fact, he had been sitting on it for well over ten years. As a passionate young student of enology at UC Davis in the mid-1980's, Matt stumbled across a little poem that struck a resonate chord in his vinous imagination. Pressed into a corner of his wallet, this curious verse had long since been forgotten...That is, until the introduction of the California Zinfandel program.

Who wrote it? After extensive literally searches the closest we came was the Bible with the obvious changes.

Know me, stranger,
For I am thy life blood
and thy nectar.
I shall wet thy lips, parched
by the winds of deprivation.
And nourished shall be thy body,
desicated by the scorching
inferno of temperance.
Rest thy head upon my bosom,
Lose thyself in the ecstasy of
my caresses,
And know me,
For I am
ZINFANDEL!
