Cline Cellars sweep show at Harvest Fair

Cline Cellars sweep show at Harvest Fair
Cline Cellars was a grand prize winner in Sonoma County Harvest Fair wine competition. Our of 587 wines, two were selected as the best of show for all red and white wine varietals and awarded the Harvest Fair sweepstakes awards.

The 1996 Los Carneros Syrah was made by winemaker Matt Cline. The wine, made from grapes grown in the Carneros region of southeastern Sonoma County.

It was a first-time win for Cline Cellars, which competed against entries from Sonoma, Napa, Lake, Mendocino and Marin counties. The 1996 Los Carneros Syrah was amongst 15 other syrahs, seven of which won gold medals and the other eight won silver or bronze medals.

Cline Cellars planted the syrah in 1990, a time when it was generally unknown whether the grape variety could do well in the cool Carneros climate. "It was a big risk, but sometimes risks can pay off," Matt Cline said. "We had our first crop in 1994. I knew right then that we were going to make our name with syrah." Syrah a native the Rhone region in France is known for its full-bodied texture and robust flavors. "It's a up and coming variety, fairly easy to grow and responds well in the winery. It's a delicious wine. I've always said it was going to be a winner someday for the consumer - It's easy to pronounce and it tastes great," he said.

1997 Los Carneros Roussanne Wins Gold

Cline Cellars wins gold medal for the 1997 Los Carneros Roussanne at Sonoma County Harvest Fair wine competition. Roussanne is one of the most treasured white varietals of the northern Rhone Valley in France. Roussanne is used in exotic white wine blends and as varietal in Hermitage, St. Joseph and St. Perey in the great Rhone region. For Cline Cellars, the Los Carneros vineyard is planted in shallow clay and loam soils on the flats our winery and on a steep hillside. The wine has a rich mouthfeel and is loaded with exotic citrus, melon and spicy notes. Winemaker, Matt Cline is also excited about the future of Roussanne in California.
