The Fiberglass Fantasies Thames Sedan "Time
Bomb" is the second half of a 2 part article I wrote for Car Model
Magazine in 1972. The first half of the article shows how to build the "VW
Panel Truck". Click on this link "VW Panel"
to see the VW Panel Truck. These models were made by mixing and matching
up parts from the IMC Volkswagen and Revell Thames Panel Truck kits. I usually
take parts from 2 or more kits to make 1 custom model, but this time I planned
it so that I could get 2 kit bashed models from 2 kits. I did end up taking
some parts from other kits, but that's just because I thought they looked
better.
The Time Bomb's body is made up of the Thames
front half and the VW rear half. The chassis and engine are from the IMC
Volkswagen kit. The removable front end was made by gluing the hood to the
fenders, filling the original grill cavities and cutting the new hood line.
There is a wing on the back of the Time Bomb, can you find it? The wing
is under the rear end - between the rear wheels. The undercarriage view
at the bottom of the page shows you its location. The wing is made from
sheet plastic. Those giant slicks are from one of the original Lil' Mixer
kits. Front wheels are from AMT's Double Dragster kit.The transmission blanket,
blower explosion belts and seat belts, shoulder harness are made with cloth
and painted.
The Time Bomb was painted with Testors Gloss
Yellow and then lightly dusted from underneath with Testors Racing Orange.
Decals were then applied and Testors Glosscote was sprayed on for the final
coats.
