The Fiberglass Fantasies VW Panel Truck is
the first half of a 2 part article I wrote for Car Model Magazine in 1972.
The second half of the article shows how to build the Thames Drag Sedan
the "Time Bomb". Click on this link "TIME
BOMB" to see the Thames Drag Sedan. These models were made by mixing
and matching up parts from the IMC Volkswagen and Revell Thames Panel Truck
kits. I usually take parts from 2 or more kits to make 1 custom model, but
this time I planned it so that I could get 2 kit bashed models from 2 kits.
I did end up taking some parts from other kits, but that's just because
I thought they looked better. These are new photos of the 30 year old model.
The VW Panel is made from the front of an
old style Volkswagen Beetle and the rear section from the Thames Panel.
The wheelbase of the VW Panel was shortened 1/2" and was fit to the
Thames Chassis, which was also shortened 1/2". Other modifications
include; a scratch built Ram Air System, see-through hood panels and enlarged
rear windows. The interior was painted red with red flannel carpeting. The
VW Panel was painted with Testors Gloss Yellow and then lightly dusted from
underneath with Testors Racing Orange. Decals were then applied and Testors
Glosscote was sprayed on for the final coats.
