The city of Haifa is built around mount Carmel.  It was here that Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal.

"Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, which eat at Jezebel's table."   I Kings 18:19.

When they were gathered together, Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal to call down fire from heaven.  After they failed, Elijah called down fire, and slayed the prophets of Baal.
