After the arrival of Joseph and Emma, Newell K Whitney and their 5 children shared their residence with them for about 6 weeks, from Feb to March of 1831. This was the first of 4 residences Joseph and Emma would live in before having their own home.

Soon after Joseph's arrival, Alice (Elsa) Johnson, John Johnson's wife, who had a "lame arm" she could not use, visited Joseph at the Whitney home. The Johnsons traveled with Ezra Booth their Methodist minister, and their doctor. Elsa asked Joseph for a blessing to heal her arm. The morning after her request, in front of 8 witnesses, Joseph blessed her, and her arm was healed instantly. The Johnsons and thier minister were baptized into the Church after this healing. Joseph and Emma later lived with the Johnsons at their home and farm.
