Homework Assignment #2

Solutions (65K PDF file)

Main topics: Gravity, Light

This assignment is due at the beginning of class on Friday, February 14. Late homework will not be accepted.

Homework should be written on paper. Please copy the problem statement onto the page above your solution. Remember to put your name at the top of the page. If you require more than one page, multiple pages must be stapled together. The homework will be returned once it has been graded in the boxes on the ninth floor of the Physics building, opposite the elevator.

Problems involve either a calculation, or a short answer. Where a calculation is called for, show your work. Where a short answer is called for, a few sentences is sufficient. In either case, draw diagrams if that helps you explain your answer.

You must stable. Now that it's the 21st century, staplers are hardly new technology. If your homework solutions span more than one page, staple the multiple pages together. If your homework answers are on more than one page, I will take off three points if you do not staple the homework (or only one point if you use a paper clip, which is not as good as stapling). You have been warned!

  1. The moon and all of the planets appear to go through phases, meaning that most of the time we see only a part of their surface. The Sun never goes through phases. Explain why the Sun is different from the Moon and the planets.

  2. Chapter Three, Question 7 in the text (page 83).

  3. Chapter Three, Question 17 in the text (page 84).

  4. Chapter Four, Question 11 in the text (page 126). You may skip part (b), as we may not have talked in class about what you need to do this by the time this homework is due.

  5. Chapter Four, Question 14 in the text (page 126).

  6. Chapter Four, Question 16 in the text (page 126).
