Session 15—Tu, Mar 6: 川端康成 (2 of 3)
Topics for this session
❖ 掌の小説 てのひらのしょうせつ: 「指輪」 ゆびわ (1924)
❖ 掌の小説 てのひらのしょうせつ: 「金絲雀」カナリヤ (1924)
Thoughts*
It might help to think of 「指輪」 together with 「弱き器」, including what Kawabata is suggesting about the male protagonists in these two stories. Also, here and in all these 掌の小説 observe how important conversation is in determining the rhythm of the text. In 「金絲雀」, that he is addressing someone is all important. Please don't let go of that narrative stance as you tease the meaning out of this story.
Required—to be completed for today's session
✓ Read 「指輪」
✓ Read 「金絲雀」
✓ Phrasing homework due at the beginning of this session.
It is in the story 「金絲雀」 only, marked with an ugly call-out box (still working on a more elegant way to do that).
