The TV

The Pennas got TV in 1953, in the form of this 21-inch Motorola. Mother found some fault with the mahoganny doors, and fought with the store until they either replaced or refinished them.

That looks like a Donald Duck cartoon, so we must be watching Disneyland. As you can see from the ghosts, we had terrible TV reception from San Francisco stations because of the hills. Stockton's KOVR, channel 13, had its transmitter on Mt. Diablo, and came in much better. When all the Sacramento stations moved to a big tower in the delta, that's all we watched. The round thing on the front door is the doorbell which, if you twisted it with sufficient force, produced a truly ear-shattering jangle. I liked to start off easy and see how loud I could go before getting yelled at.

This is a "found" picture, previously unprinted because of underexposure and partial fogging from being at the head of the roll.
