c.1962 The 300 block of Magnolia Ave. at Hil Probert's car showroom and gas station, now the Lark Creek Shops. Hil Probert was a vintage car buff and had a large collection, and this day he hosted a horseless carriage gathering. As I mentioned on a previous page, our house at 9 Arch St. was devilishly hard to find, and here you can see why. You're actually looking at the corner of Magnolia and Arch. Where is it, you ask? Well, it's across the street, between the Salvation Army collection box and Probert's used car lot. Down here at the bottom, Arch is just a sidewalk; the stairs start about a quarter of the way up the hill, and a bit farther on is the entrance to our place. There was never a street sign, which always aggravated my mother. The addition of the Salvation Army box was almost the last straw in the tawdryfication of the area; note the weeds and the dented oil drum the city placed for a trash receptacle. A fine impression all this made on visitors to our home, Mother would fume. Photo by Paul Penna |
