Rainbow Market > Rainbow Market Exterior No. 1

1955 Despite what you might gather from watching current films set in the 1950s, not everybody drove brand new cars back then. In 1955, it still wasn't unusual to see pre-war cars, like this black sedan from the late 30s. I'm pretty sure it belonged to one of my mother's friends, Mrs. Marie Skala, who lived up the canyon. That is a new 1955 Ford at the left, though, and at the right is either a Plymouth or DeSoto from 1954. We're several years into the TV era here, as witness the antenna aimed toward San Francisco. TV reception in Larkspur was iffy for most because of the hills. Cable TV for our area was several years off, so we had to put up with pictures filled with ghosts. You can also see a string of colored lights strung across Magnolia Ave. These served two purposes: they'd be lit each Saturday when the Rose Bowl was operating, and then later in the year as part of the street decorations for Christmas.
