August 1958 Redwood High School, the year it opened. The first phase of its construction left the main building an L-shaped affair. Phase two, begun in 1961, built two additional wings to form a square, with the library and what was then designated the "Senior Quad" in the center. Also erected, between the main building and the shop class building at the right, was the infamous, wind-swept C.E.A., the Covered Eating Area. I don't recall ever going into it. Now that I think of it, the shop building also had some regular classrooms; I spent an agonizing semester in one failing to come to grips with the intricacies of algebra. My main traumas, however, occurred in the gym, at the left. It was little consolation thinking it looked like an overgrown Safeway store. Ektachrome slide by Will Penna |
