c.1963 The building at the corner of Magnolia Ave. and Doherty Dr., now housing the Mt. Tam Racquet Club, was originally constructed around 1962-3 for the Value World discount department store. This photo was taken on their grand opening night. There was no traffic signal yet, so toward the left you can see a Larkspur police officer directing traffic with a highway flare, and his patrol car parked at the intersection. Around 1968, Value World ceased operations, and in 1969 Disco Wonderworld was doing business here. Disco had started as a membership-only discount store called "M.A.C." for "Marin Associated Consumers" in 1955 at 555 Francisco Blvd. in San Rafael. They operated in both locations until about 1973, when the Larkspur store closed, though its pharmacy operation continued for a time in the shopping center across the street. By 1974, the Racquet Club had taken over the building.
