American Craftsman Style | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
In 1968, when I had been making pottery for about 4 years, I saw a picture in a book of a jug from Crete that had been made somewhere between 1900-1700 B.C. I remember being truly stunned, first by the beauty of the piece and then with the understanding that good design transcends time and that the technical advances of the last 4000 years are just techniques and were not necessary to create beauty from clay. I have spent the years since working to develope my own distinctive style in pottery. People see echos of many cultures blended in my work. When I look at ceramics from the early 1900's I see echos of many of the same styles that have influenced me. Perhaps that is why many of my pieces are so at home in the decor of that era.
In my general line, I have five colors currently available. Almost every piece I make is available in any of the colors. The most popular for this style is probably Lichen, Satin Black, Ironwood and Ivory. For more information about colors go to Glaze Choices. My work is sold in such places as the Gamble House/USC and Fallingwater as well as museum gift shops and quality stores around the county. It was chosen to be featured in the Gift Shop of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in conjuntion with the exhibition "California Pottery: From Missions to Modernism" in 2001. I make a wide variety of shapes in both vases and planters. This page will give you an idea of some of the pieces that people chose to fit into the decor of the early 20th Century. Each of these syles is linked to a page that gives complete details of sizes and dimensions as well as the ability to order on line with secure credit card processing. To get a good sense of the complete scope of my work, you can also visit the Gallery of Vases and the Gallery of Planters. I will be adding more shapes to this page soon, so be sure to come back and take a look. |
