Though I love the simplicity of an elegant vase clothed in a subtle glaze, sometimes a little something extra is a nice change. I am pleased to now offer you a selected line of vase shapes with assorted brushwork decoration. |

What is the process?
After a piece has been formed, it must be hand finished, dried, and fired before it is ready to be decorated. The design is applied freehand using only a brush and hot wax. The brushwork must be quick and sure to give a good, clean outline. The pot is then held using metal dipping tongs while it is dipped into a bucket of glaze. The porous clay absorbs water from the glaze slip and deposits a coating of glaze on the pot. Wherever the wax was applied, the glaze rolls off and does not adhere ("wax resist"). The wax burns off in the kiln during the second firing to leave the design on the bare clay contrasted with the colored glaze.

Which glazes and shapes are available with brushwork?
This line is currently available in the five glazes which are shown above: Sapphire Blue, Ironwood, Satin Black, Ivory and Lichen. The shapes used for brushwork need to be simple so that shape and decoration complement one another. A complete list of shapes, sizes and prices is given below. The Wall Vases have brushwork on one side only, and all of the rest have matching brushwork both front and back.
How are they ordered?
You choose the color and pattern by using the "Choose" button to specify exactly what you want. The brushwork patterns on the vases above are listed on the photo along with the different glazes. Since all brushwork is done freehand, there will be some variation from one piece to another and from front to back of the same piece. I think that is a great part of the appeal.
