Hot Jazz Of the 1920s

Royal Society Jazz Orchestra Recording

Hear the very first recording by Don Neely's 11-piece Royal Society Jazz Orchestra!

On Hot Jazz Of The 1920s, hear and feel the TESTOSTERONE! The boys play it HOT and THEN SOME! Or shall I say, the needle is all the way into "RED DANGER" zone on the Jazz-O-Meter. The songs are all 1920s Jazz, some are standards, others obscure, but all are worthy of renewed appreciation. Have some fun with this rompin' stompin' expression of youthful enthusiasm for vintage jazz. Recorded in 1978 at San Jose University.

Musicians:
Don Neely,- leader, alto sax, clarinet, soprano sax, vocals; Dick Randolf - cornet; Tom Brozene - cornet; Manny Alcantar - cornet; Howard Myata - trombone, vocals; Ron Deeter - alto, clarinet; Lin Patch - Tenor, clarinet; John Benson - Piano; Pat Durtrow - Banjo, tenor Guitar; Rick Siverson - Tuba, Bass, vocals; Jimmy Hurt - Drums.

Deja Vu?

Includes songs of Yosemite — Hetch Hetchy, Redwood, and Wawona Waltz

Royal Society Jazz Orchestra Recording

Don Neely has honed his song-writing talents in the past several years, to the delight of many RSJO fans. Deja Vu? is a unique and entertaining collection of songs in 1920s Syncopated Jazz and 1930s-Big Band Swing styles. Songs by Mr. Neely are played with heart-stirring spirit and finesse. Indeed, the RSJO has never sounded better. Among the types of songs on the CD are mid-thirties-style romantic swing, a tribute to Ellington's 1920s Cotton Club style, jaunty 1920s syncopated jazz, a sad and slyly witty song about a dog named Rover, a pean to the Redwoods, a rousing song about Hetch Hetchy Valley in Yosemite, an authentic old-time  polka with sardonic lyrics, tender ballads and more. Don's songs receive considerable audience appreciation at the RSJO's performances in San Francisco and elsewhere. People are astonished when they learn that the songs are new and written by Neely. Singing with the RSJO on the rousing Hetch Hetchy, The Wa-wo-na Waltz, title song Deja Vu?, and others is Tom Bopp, singer/pianist and historian at the Wawona Hotel, and Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite. You'll also enjoy scintillating vocals by Carla Normand, Don Neely, and Frederick Hodges. Additional Don Neely songs can be heard on CDs Sweet and Low-Down and Jump Start. Compact Disc and Download.

  • Review by Paul Mehling, Leader of the Hot Club Of San Francisco

    Hi Don,
I'm not even finished with the CD yet it's imperative that I write
    while still listening:

In my humble opinion, this is GREAT STUFF (you may quote me).

First of all, everyone is playing & singing great- very relaxed,
well-rehearsed extremely sincere. This is often not the case when
bands play 'original' tunes- they get bogged down in various sticky
issues like interpretation, feel, concept, familiarity, etc.
You've got quite a crew there, and they're all giving 101% for your
tunes, which -to get to the point of things- are GREAT!.......

  • Sweet and Low-Down

    Royal Society Jazz Orchestra Recording

Don Neely treats us to humorous send-up of his new hit song, "Bungee Jump." Frederick Hodges is back with his inimitable piano playing and sings "What A Day!" Andrew Storar joins Carla on "If I Had A Million Dollars." And the band ... is swingingly superb! Big Band Swing and 1920s jazz at it's best!
