SEBASTOPOL
COMMUNITY PROFILE

The first known inhabitants of the area were the Miwok and Pomo Indians.  Sebastopol lies within the Analy Township, which was so named by Jasper O’Farrell who came to California from the county of “Annaly” in Ireland in 1843.  Sebastopol was named for the  Crimean seaport of Sevastopol in Russia in 1850’s.  In the late 1800’s when the Gravenstein Apple was introduced, Sebastopol became the pioneer town of canned applesauce, an industry that was foremost in the town for nearly a century.

In 1885 Luther Burbank purchased acreage in Sebastopol for an experimental nursery.  It is known as Gold Ridge Farm and a small plot of land from the farm remains and is open to visitors.  In 1890 the Northwestern Pacific Railroad open3d a branch to      Sebastopol.  In 1904 an electric train carried passengers between Petaluma, Santa Rosa and Sebastopol.  Sebastopol was           incorporated a city on June 13, 1902, and has a manager-council type of government.

Since the early 1900’s  Sebastopol has held Apple Fairs celebrating the crops which distinguish the area.  For over 50 years, its annual springtime Apple Blossom Festival has attracted thousands of flower lovers to the area for blossom tours and related festivities.  The Gravenstein Apple Fair marks the beginning of the region’s abundant August apple crop.

The surrounding area is also renown as a diverse agricultural paradise extolling a cornucopia of flowers, fruits and vegetables.  Walking trails in the parks and Laguna de Santa Rosa Wetlands.  Rolling vineyards now mark West Sonoma County as one of the world’s finest wine grape growing regions.  An abundance of    organic produce is available at the local Farmer’s Market on     Sunday an in all local supermarkets.

Residents and guests enjoy a variety of dining, shopping and    recreational opportunities.  Visits to gourmet restaurants and   winery tasting rooms can cap a day of pursuing local boutiques, galleries, antique and book stores or an outing to one of the many spectacular  state or regional parks or ocean beaches.  Community classes, activities, music events and live theater for all ages and interests are available throughout the area.

A number of high tech internet and network businesses have emerged.  Research and development, tech publishing and system security businesses flourish in Sebastopol.  Close proximity to the greater Bay Area and the beautiful climate have helped these companies locate  in Sebastopol.

Sebastopol is proud of its balance of small-town character with the sophisticated amenities of larger cities.  From shops to farms to technology to fine dining and solar powered facilities, the area offers something for everyone—whether for a weekend or for a lifetime...
