Turning a water problem into a landscape feature and agroforestry zone
A small perennial stream drains the farm's western watershed, crossing flat pastureland before it enters Garrard Creek. During the heavy rains of winter, stream waters dispersed broadly across the pasture, creating a muddy mess for cows and haying equipment.
In 1999-2001 a channel was carved across the pasture and a pond was excavated to divert storm runoff and contain the water flow. In the following years several agroforestry zones were planted in the lower pasture, including trees and blueberries.
