The
town of Sonoma is a mix of old and new. Downtown Sonoma
is a national historic landmark. The Mission San Francisco
Solano, the last of the California missions, is the historic
cornerstone of the city. In 1846 Sonoma was capital of the
Republic of California. It was the time of the Bear Flag
Revolt and unleashed events that resulted later in our first
state flag. There are many historic sites to see, the Mexican
army barracks, Mission San Francisco Solano de Sonoma and
General Vellejo's home. The tree lined residential neighborhoods
offer a rich variety of architectural styles.
Sonoma
town square is a shaded plaza with a park in the center,
the largest of its kind in California. Enjoy fine restaurants,
bookshops and boutiques as you stroll through the square.
Sonoma Valley is a federally-designated wine appellation region,
meaning that the climate, soils, and topography of the valley
produce grapes of a distinctive and extraordinary character.
Ranked as one of the top wine producing regions in the world,
the valley boasts more than thirty award-winning wineries
and, with some of the oldest vineyards and wineries in the
state, is recognized as birthplace California wine-making.
The Sonoma Valley appellation is honored in local restaurants
by the custom of serving locally-produced vintages in distinctive
blue-stemmed wine glasses.
Nearby
and just north of Sonoma are two charming unincoporated
towns of Kenwood and Glen Ellen. Both offer small town life
and are in the heart of some of the most beautiful wine
country this side of Tuscany.
