Overall Course Schedule (Outline) | next session

Session 01—Wed, Jan 18: Course introduction • QuickThink 01 (QT01)

Topics for this session

❖ Orientation: Brief course explanation & paperwork
❖ OuickThink 01, based on optionally assigned readings and in-class screened short film "Clean-up"

Thoughts*

This class meets in Dwinelle 127. Do not believe any other online information you might have read.

If you have missed this class, you will need to review this important session via podcast. You will also need to complete the paperwork immediately. Missing this class, if you are on the waitlist, pretty much guarantees that you will be dropped from the waitlist.

This class is very full. No one on the waitlist should consider their chances "good" for being able to enroll in the course, although some will be able to enroll.

Required—to be completed for today's session

Class rules, syllabus, etc. — In order to make space later in the semester for film discussion, and in order to reduce some of the anxiety students feel when enrolled in this class due to being unclear as to what is expected, I have moved some critical materials outside the space of the class sessions (and, in particular, the Orientation session) and present them instead in written form. These comments are in two places: the Syllabus and EA105 Course Basics (Spring 2012). Both can be accessed from the sidebar. If you are waitlisted, these documents will give you a clear idea as to what you can expect from this class. Please drop from the waitlist if you decide you are no longer interested. I have students who could not get onto the waitlist because it was full who are very interested in this course.

EA105 Course Basics (Spring 2012) [onsite, HTML—see sidebar "Course Rules & Goals"]

In class today I will ask a couple of questions about each of the below titles. Answering the Ise monogatari 24 questions and the Umbrella questions is optional. However, reading these very short assignments and writing about them will allow you to get some early feedback on my expectations for this class, without any grade risk. If you are wait-listed, answering these questions well might make some difference in whether you are moved from the waitlist, but it is not the primary criterion. Both Ise monogatari 24 and Umbrella are very short. "Clean-Up" will be screened in class. It is about 6 minutes long. There is an outside chance that QT01 will be cancelled if we encounter serious room problems or so. Sorry about that. This QT, like all others, cannot be made up.

✓ Optional: Ise monogatari 24 [bSpace, PDF].
✓ Optional: Umbrella [bSpace, PDF].
✓ Optional: Previewing of "Clean-up [short film]" [YouTube, videostream].

*THOUGHTS: Reading before class probably helps follow session content, reading afterwards might help consolidate notes, revisiting for tests is recommended. Content might be added before class or anytime up until about 24 hours ahead of a midterm.

*TEXTS, MULTIMEDIA NOTES, LINKS: If I have read from something, shown something or presented audio that is not elsewhere mentioned, I usually include that information here for the curious, sometime after the class (since I often make last-minute decisions about including something). It might take a while and sometimes I forget. You can email me.

*OTHER: When possible I note here names, places, and other details that I have mentioned in a lecture that would otherwise not be accessible in the assigned materials or easily located on your own. As with "TEXTS ..." this is usually sometime after class and, again, I might not be able to get around to doing it.

Summer 2012 links to regular academic year session pages

This summer I am simply stacking two regular year 50-minute sessions into one 110 minute summer session, mostly. Since there are more teaching minutes in the summer, there are some open, unschedule sessions. What we do for those times will be noted in the "Thoughts" section of the previous session page. So, for example, Sess07 will also have notes on it as to what we do for the second half of our class that day.
