Product Care
Care tips for your wooly bed:

1. Every morning - 'unmake your bed' - pull back the comforter and let all the surface areas of your snuggle nest 'breathe'. This is how natural fibers are revitalized and neutralized.

2. Every time you change the sheets, pull your mattress mate over the foot of your bed and let the under side 'breathe' for a full day.

Besides revitalizing itself it also releases any moisture that may be lingering. Turn the mattress mate upside down and rotate it end to end for balanced use.

3. At least once every season, take all of your woollies outside for an all day sun bath. Place the mattress mate, comforter and pillows over a deck rail or chairs or any outdoor furniture that lends itself to the task.

Direct sun and air amplifies the neutralizing effect, expells moisture and even bleaches stains, naturally. The sun will revive wool's natural loft.

4. Protect your comforter with a washable comforter cover.

5. Your mattress mate will be protected by a sheet. Stains and spills that leak through, can be washed with a little soap and water and a soft bristle brush. Allow it to air-dry. Yellowing, caused by perspiration can be bleached by the sun. Other cultures who have had a continuously strong relationship with natural fibers also have the common sense lifestyle wisdom to go with it.

MATTRESS USE AND CARE INFORMATION

Mattress Size/Shape

When we create our handmade bedding we allow no more than a 1” variation (in length and width) from desired bed dimensions.  But be aware that our all-wool mattresses can change size slightly over their life-span.  Packaging for shipping often causes the mattress to temporarily gain/lose an inch.  Also, the mattress will expand slightly as it fills in and settles.  This usually adds from 1 to 2 inches in length and width.

Frame Specifications

We recommend that our all-wool mattress is placed on a slatted, wooden foundation that will provide support and allow airflow to the bedding.  Our frame has 2.5” slats that are spaced 1.5” apart.  The 2.5” slats accommodate the addition of our latex strips without blocking airflow.  Slats spaced no more than 2” apart provide the best support for this unique mattress. If you are happy with your current frame, consider our custom box insert to transform your frame into a supportive, slatted frame.

Chemical Sensitivities

We take great precautions to be sure that our bedding is as safe and chemical-free as possible.  Our wool batting is grown and processed with great care to avoid harmful chemicals.  Organic wools are currently very limited and unable to compare to our high-quality, locally produced wool.

Occasionally, new wool bedding (particularly right out of the packaging) has a mild lanolin scent.  This natural scent diminishes quickly over time—especially with a little air and sun.

Please call our office to request sensitivity kit if you are concerned about chemicals or wool allergies.

“Breaking-in” a New Wool Mattress

The wool mattress is carefully compressed by hand when it is created, but be aware that the wool batting will compress an additional 10-15% with use.  Our other wool-filled products will compress as much as 40% (pillows and mattress toppers).  This is a completely natural and unavoidable process; it does not decrease any of the positive qualities of sleeping with wool.

One must be aware of this process in order to help a wool mattress wear evenly.  Occasional turning and flipping of the mattress will help to keep the compression even.  Make sure to sleep on as much of the bed as possible.  If you notice the mattress is forming “dips” where you tend to sleep, make an effort to rotate the Snugglemate and mattress and to sleep in a different area.

If you desire more ‘give’ after the mattress and topper have completely compressed (3 to 6 months) you have the option to add another layer of wool to your bed.  You can add latex strips, a simple wool felt, or another topper at any time.  Call our office if you have any questions.

Routine Care

1.  When you wake up in the morning, fold your blankets down toward the foot of the bed.  This allows the most active areas of your bed a chance to release moisture.
2.  Most people use a Snugglemate topper with our mattress.  The topper should be folded down to the foot of the bed once a month or whenever you wash your sheets (more or less maintenance may be necessary depending on your climate).  The topper should be taken outside for a thorough airing/sunning 3-4 times per year.
3.  We make washable wool mattress protectors (the same material that encases the all-wool mattress).   These washable protectors are a great addition to your natural bed.
4.  The mattress will also benefit from a day of air and sun; we recommend that you do this once per year.  Sun will naturally revitalize the wool fibers and keep your bedding fresh and dry.

If you follow these simple steps, your wool bed will last longer and provide you with many wonderful nights of sleep.

Mattress Return Policy

Mattresses, frames and any custom-made items are not returnable unless agreed defective.  Other items (comforters, pillows, and snugglemates) can be returned if they are not used.  The customer is responsible for shipping and a modest restock charge (15%).
