Hardcopy dictionary

Our library has a large number of 古語辞典. Some can be checked out; others remain in the library for all to use. Here is a screen capture of an Oskikat search using 古語辞典 and limiting results to the Japanese language. I've checked off the appropriate choices. Obviously there are many more.

Digital dictionaries

Berkeley pays a subscription fee to the wonderful site JapanKnowledge. If you are on campus you can access through the East Asian Library Web site. If you are off campus you will need to set up your proxy first. The Berkeley library system has instructions for that.

Since the available dictionaries are NOT specifically 古語辞典, you need to use かおる so that is a huge downside to this particular solution. Still Shogakukan's dictionary is SO very good that it might be worth the hassle. And it's free.

First deselect a bunch of stuff on the left-hand side so you don't get hits for かおる all over the place. Then Go!

Then go to the 日本国語大辞典 (the other choice is a bit too shortened) and it is so brilliant as a dictionary, and big ...

Kinokuniya always has on hand at least a couple of these. Any publisher basically is OK. I wouldn't worry too much about that. It will cost you 35-55 dollars. Advantages: you'll have this forever, there is a bunch of wonderful info in the back, lots of charts, and so on.

Digital dictionaries

I am guessing that most 電子辞典 now include a 古語辞典 as part of the package. So if you own such, you should check that first.

If you don't own and don't want to own a 電子辞典 there are laptop, iPad and iPhone options. I haven't bought a laptop version is forever, so I can't speak to that issue. But here's a screen capture of what is on iTunes App Store. I'm using the 旺文社 (Obunsha) version and it is excellent. 角川 (Kadokawa)　and ベネッセ (Benesse) are also excellent publishers of 古語辞典 but I haven't see these particular versions.

You can borrow a dictionary from me for the term, although this is breaking my own policy for not loaning out dictionaries. When I have done so in the past, dictionaries have almost always come back to me fairly heavily used, including coffee across some pages. So 1) you will need to carry the dictionary inside a clean envelope or bag so it doesn't pick up environmental dirt from your backpack or whatever, 2) you will need to use it with clean hands, 3) it will need to be in great shape when you return it. If any of these three things are not the case, I will ask for cash to replace it at its current Kinokuniya price and I will withhold submitting your grade until you have paid me :-)
