西行の和歌における、宗祇の連歌における、雪舟の絵における、利休の茶における、貫道（くわんだう）するものは一（いつ）なり。しかも風雅におけるもの、造化（ざうくわ）にしたがひて四時（しいじ）を友とす。見る処（ところ）、花にあらずといふことなし、おもふところ、月にあらずといふことはし。像（かたち）花にあらざる時は夷狄（いてき）にひとし。心（こころ）花にあらざる時は鳥獣（てうじう）に類（るい）す。夷狄を出で、鳥獣を離れて、造化にしたがひ造化にかへれとなり。

• 風雅（ふうが） in this case means 俳諧（はいかい）
• 造化 is 天地自然, Nature (with a capital "N"), "that which has been created"
• 四時 is 四季
• 花、月 symbolic for 美
• 夷狄 "barbarians" "uncivilized foreigners" (based on the Chinese term)
