Session 19—Midterm 01

Topics for this session

Midterm 01

Special notes

I have dropped Genji from our schedule so that you do not have to prep the Genji poems at the same time you are preparing for Midterm 01.

I have added this reading assignment: Hisamatsu on Yugen (bSpace), through to the end of page 40. It might be lighted tested for its main points.

The test will have two parts and you will have the full session although it will be designed to be closely to a 35-40 minute test.

In part one you will be tested on the information that has been indicated in green, bold face type since the beginning of the term. This information is more of less of three types: about poets, cultural information, grammar points. It is likely that I will write questions on two of these three categories. Please remember that some of the green, bold face type directs you to web sites.

In part two, I will give you five poems you have not seen before and ask you to place each in one of the books of love and say why you made that decision. (There will be one and only one for each book.) It is likely that I will provide vocabulary so that you don't have to look things up and I don't have to find weird minor poems that I'm sure won't be example poems in dictionaries. They will not be Kokin poems but reviewing the PDF on those love poems might be helpful. This part tests your ability to read and understand a poem, and understand its poetic point well enough to have an opinion on where to place it. Incorrect claims might deduct points so please don't try to make something up; write what you are sure of. (Example: "This is a Book II poem because of the passion is shows." That is just too generic a statement and could be said without understanding the poem at all. Better: "This is a Book II poem because the waves crashing against the shore represents the persistent attention that the man is showing towards the woman and Book II poems are about, in part, the strong and strengthening interest between two people.")

Poems originally scheduled for this session (I am leaving them here as a just-in-case scenario but you do NOT have to prepare them in any way at all)
