What can we do to enliven ourselves during the last winter months?
The days are growing warmer and we sense the springtime coming on. Many caregivers spend too much time indoors. As the spring approaches take time to worship the sun.
If we expose the retinas of the eyes to morning sunlight for 20 minutes a day, it has been shown to decrease depression. What an easy ritual to improve wellness and at the same time welcome the spring.
Springtime is the said to be the "greening" of the year. When your heart is tired and weary from caring for others, take time to breathe in the freshness all around you. Allow the greenery in the scenery to heal your heart. When stuck in the house, or in traffic, it is easy to look around and notice the green of the springtime in almost any landscape.
Another ritual for spring that leads to good health is to welcome the season by choosing to eat more "green" foods. This is the season for lettuces, spinach, chards, and kale. All of these are nutrient dense foods. Lettuces are known for the enzymes they offer. Spinach, chard and kale are good sources of vitamin A, iron and calcium.
A final ritual for the spring that may appeal to some caregivers that spend a lot of time at home would be to plant a small springtime garden. A few pots or a raised bed could provide lettuces in about 45 days. Keep it simple at first. It will be very nourishing to you to know that you grew the greens you are eating.
These are a few simply ideas that caregivers can enjoy to nourish themselves in the coming Spring.
