Thoughts—read before class, revisit for tests
These are key points, in case you missed this session:
- Check announcements frequently; no in-class announcements
- Learn, and use, my subject line system for emails. (See sidebar.)
- Read these policies by end of first week: green, laptop, academic honesty. The last two can quickly affect your grade negatively. (Access through sidebar.)
- Read the syllabus
- This is the primary Web site for this course
- Academic honesty is very important to me. Read the policy on this.
- I discuss the basic approach for this class which is to put concepts first, but by the end have all the various texts placed within their historical contexts as well, and that the emphasis for most readings in on aethetics and emotional content, not just what happened
- Noted that the contributions of China & Korea to premodern culture are unver-mentioned
- Stated that we emphasize ga in the ga-zoku (雅俗) rubric
- Noted that certain frameworks will be referenced: Shintō (esp. purity and harmony/wa 和), Buddhism, Confucianism, groupness
