Choice of Books by Sir John Lubbock (1896)

Lubbock's list was first published in 1886. I have transcribed the version published in 1896 and noted changes made by the time it was reprinted in 1930

"I  drew up the list, not as that of the hundred best books, but, which is very different, of those which have been most frequently recommended as best worth reading."
— Sir John Lubbock, 1890

For more about this list and Lubbock's part in starting the Great Books Movement, see "Where Did the Great Books Come From Anyway?" by W. B. Carnochan, Stanford Humanities Review, 6:8 (1998)

The content of this page may belong to the author. The transcription, however, is the result of my research and hard work. It may not be reposted on any Web site, newsgroup, mailing list, or other publicly available electronic format. Please link to this page instead.
